Newsletter of the
Greetings
from the President, JoAn
Segal
The Bernstein concert on November 12 and 13 is just a
short time away. This is a very
significant performance for me, for a number of personal reasons. For one, I am eager for this concert to
be a big success. We are hoping to
sell large numbers of tickets for both the Denver and Boulder performances, not
only because we have this wonderful music to share with the community, but also
because it is financially important to bring in the lion's share of our ticket
income for the year. (Our concerts
with the Phil will bring in only a flat fee plus a share of any profits.) Please take tickets and flyers and
promote this performance!
Another significance of this concert for me relates to
my associations with Leonard Bernstein and his music, especially West Side Story. To those of you much younger than I am,
it may seem unbelievable, but my then young and very ill husband and I attended
a first run performance of that show in New York in 1958, just before coming to
Colorado. Its theme of the clash of
cultures (he was Jewish, I from an Irish Catholic background) nevertheless
offered the hope of finding "a place for us"; this was our dream of life in
Colorado. We first saw Candide as a
less-than-fully staged production here in Boulder in the mid-1960's and identified strongly with what is now deemed
the "corny" Make Our Garden
Grow.
Last, the 13th of November, 2005 is the 100th
anniversary of my mother's birth and therefore an important milestone for
me. Spending that day and the one
before in performing music, some of it familiar, some of it new, some of it
secular, some sacred, some popular, some classical, is an aesthetic and
spiritual experience for me.
I hope you will think about what singing the works of
Bernstein means to you. Few of you
will remember him as a conductor or even as a living human being. I hope you will find in this music the
beauty created by an innovative, exciting man who made a living as a conductor
of orchestras all over the world yet found time to create music that spoke to
his contemporaries and continues to resonate with the 21st century
audience.
A Simcha is a happy occasion.
May this concert be a Simcha for you.

Please note on your calendars that the required Dress
Rehearsal for the Bernstein Concert is Thursday, November 10th, 7:00-10:00p.m.,
at First United Methodist Church in Boulder. If you are going to be late to this
rehearsal, please inform your Section Steward and let her/him know of your
arrival that evening. Also, on the 10th, you should have your music in a black
folder as described in the Membership Handbook. Thank you.
From
Concert Manager, Miriam Lindahl
Next week, the new railings to accompany the Chorale’s
risers will be introduced. We hope
you enjoy them and feel safer because they are there.
Greg and I hope you find meaning in our unique
collaboration with the Colorado Hebrew Chorale and enjoy the beauty of the
Congregation Emanuel as well as the music we are singing.
SCFD Grant
Award
SCFD has awarded the Chorale $6,700 for the 2005-2006 season. This grant proposal was written by Josephine Bynder, who is currently chair of our Grants Committee. Thank you SCFD! The Boulder Chorale and other non-profit organizations in Boulder benefit from this tax-sponsored program.
Help the Boulder Chorale win a $1000 donation! Simply go to www.precisionplumbing.com and nominate the Boulder Chorale to receive $1000 in Precision Plumbing’s monthly giveaway for non-profit community organizations. The more nominations, the greater the chance of winning! Here are a few little pieces written by children in music education classes in Missouri. They come from the Missouri School Music Association Newsletter:

Boulder Dinner
Theatre
Joanie Oram
You are cordially invited by the King of Siam to meet
his new governess, Anna, and her son on Sunday, March 19th 2006, at
6:15 p.m. Dinner will be served in
the main ballroom and followed by a most entertaining narrative: “The King & I”. Each guest will be charged the modest
price of $42.00 for the best seat and a mere $37.75 for seats a little to the
side. It is important that your
money is received a month in advance.
Please make checks out to:
Boulder Dinner Theatre and
send them to:
Joanie Oram
303-516-9301
A mere 200 seats are available for the show, so make
your reservations quickly! You are
encouraged to make up your own tables of 2, 4, or 6 and to let Joanie know. As
always, we’ll have a wonderful evening together!
King
Soopers Grocery
Certificates?
Dede
Beardsley
King Soopers gift certificates
are the effortless way for you to make money for the Boulder Chorale. The key word here is: effortless! It reminds me of one of my favorite
fortunes: “You will earn thousands of dollars simply by doing
nothing!”
How Does It Work?
Through the Boulder Chorale, you buy King Soopers gift certificates that are as good as cash at King
Soopers and at some Safeways. If
you normally spend $200 each month on groceries, you’d buy $200 in certificates
and use them as cash when you shop for groceries.
How do we, the Boulder Chorale,
benefit?
We buy the gift certificates at the following
discounts:
·
3% if we purchase
$200-$2499 in certificates
·
4% if we purchase
$2500-$4999 in certificates
·
5% if we purchase
$5000 or more in certificates
The key is getting into the 5% bracket. We can do that by each buying
just $50 each month in certificates; that would net the Chorale $250 each
month. If we each bought just $100
each month, the Chorale would make $500 each month...simply by doing
nothing! You do the
math.
Details
I
will have certificates to sell at the Marketplace during each rehearsal
break. (They come in $25
increments.) So bring your
checkbooks! Make checks payable
to the Boulder Chorale. They’re
great gifts, too! Throw some in the
direction of your starving college student, for example! Thanks!
Upcoming
Events in December
JoAn
Segal
December - a BIG Chorale month! At the beginning of the year, some
Chorale members were lamenting that there was not enough to do this year. Well,
that was before December started shaping up! Now on our plate:
Three evenings of caroling at the beautiful new St.
Julien Hotel: Dec. 2, 3, and 17. (Hope you've filled out your interest
card!)
December 10 is the date of the concert of the Chamber
Chorale with the Boulder Philharmonic in Macky
Auditorium. The program includes Bach's Magnificat and the Christmas
portions of Handel's Messiah.
On December 11-18, we have a book fair coming up at the
Barnes and Noble, with the opportunity for a small group of carolers on the
11th and the chance to pick up lots of gifts, with a percentage of all revenues
benefiting the Chorale.
So, dates to remember: December 2, 3, 10, 11, and
17!!
The concert with the Philharmonic is taking shape. The
Chamber Chorale has been practicing every Tuesday, and also spent a whole
Saturday working on the music. The negotiations with the "Phil" are going well
and we have the opportunity to add to our coffers by making ticket sales
spectacular. We'll begin these sales right after the Bernstein concert. The
Chorale will receive a share of the profits of the concert, so this is
important. The Young Artists competition for the solo parts in the concert was
very successful and we have engaged four young people as soloists. Two are CU
students, one from UNC, and one a recent Juilliard graduate who has just moved
to Boulder.
Afterglow
Information, Jane Bender
There will be a AFTERGLOW
GATHERING on November 13th, after our Bernstein performance at First United
Methodist. All of us will need to
bring finger foods. Please, don't
bring anything messy. Sopranos and
Altos please bring 1-3 dozen cookies each. Tenors, please
bring slices or cubed pieces of fruit (with toothpicks). Basses please bring cubed pieces of
cheese (with toothpicks), and crackers to accompany if you prefer. We will need
three volunteers to bring three separate floral arrangements, in vases, for the
aesthetic effect. These can be
taken home by the same person purchasing them. We would also like to borrow three
separate punch bowls. Any volunteers who would rather bring the punch ingredients and
ice blocks instead of the section assigned item, please do! All and any help will be greatly
APPRECIATED. We would really like
to pull off a pleasant and memorable occasion for all. This is a nice way to prep for the
holiday cheer. Thanks to all and
see me if you have other helpful ideas. Sincerely and with
love to each one of you, Jane
Bender 303-665-5177(home).
