Greetings from the President, JoAn Segal

This is the second time I’ve been president of The Boulder Chorale.  And what a difference those roughly ten years have made!  From my work on the archives, it is clear that our growth has come in fits and starts, but there has never been a time when our presence in the community has been more significant.

This isn’t the first time the Chorale has had to limit the number of women it accepted (Conductor Bowles had a waiting list for women in 1976).  Nor is our total number of singers greater than ever before (that happened last year, when we hit 180 registrants; we’re now at 140.)  We have had an auditioned subgroup before (The Ensemble under Laura Dreilich Gillett.)  We have had part-time administrative help before, and for years we have sought and had some success with fund raising and grant seeking.

But while much of what we are experiencing now is not happening for the first time, the Chorale is extremely strong this season.  We have deferred accepting new women because we want balance, but that balance is really strong, with a substantial growth and presence of male singers.

We have one auditioned subgroup, the Chamber Chorale, but a second smaller group, the Women’s Chorale, which is possible because of our Assistant Conductor -- a position I haven’t observed in the archival record. All three groups perform in concert alone, and all three will play a role in our 40th anniversary concert. We have more administrative help than ever before, an office of our own, and our success with fund raising and grant seeking has reached a high point.

I think we can be proud that the years have seen us move forward in our growth.  Ideas introduced into the group as seeds by members, past and present, have taken root and flowered in this anniversary year.  I’d like to thank all those who have contributed to this growth, including those who have sung with us for many years, those who have joined us relatively recently, past and present board members and music staff, and volunteers of all stripes. The contribution of Erin Christensen-Mandel, our Administrator, cannot be over-stated -- she is a jewel. I also wish to honor our fine Artistic Director, Tim Snyder, Assistant Conductor, Kim Needham, accompanists Michael Mastronicola (lead), Caitlin Sugishita, and Tony Lee, who make major contributions to the musical excellence of the Chorale. It is that musical excellence, in the end, that drives our growth in all of its manifestations.

We now move into our 40th concert season.  The Chamber Chorale will sing on March 4th and 5th with the Laudamus Chamber Choir of Fort Collins, and on March 26th at the Estes Park Music Festival.  The Women’s Chorale Concert of World Music is on April 29th.  "For the Love of Music", our 40th anniversary concert, will take place on Saturday, May 6 at Macky Auditorium with the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra.  For all these, I would like to urge you to FILL THE HOUSE!

Boulder Chorale Tour 2007

by Jeff & Julie Hale

THANK YOU to the 87 of you who filled out the tour interest surveys!  We were very pleased with the response.  The Tour Task Force is working hard to complete our research.  We have narrowed the search down to 9 tour companies and they are each sending us proposals on several destinations.  We are also checking references for each company.  Our goal is to complete the search and with board approval, announce the 2007 Tour at the Annual Meeting / Potluck Dinner on Monday, May 8 at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church at 6:00 p.m..

Boulder Dinner Theatre

Organized by Joanie Oram

'Shall We Dance?' I asked as I was 'Getting to Know You'.  Yes, these are just two of the beautiful songs which will transport us to the rich splendors of the Far East.  A romantic score and exquisite dancing form an enchanting blend of drama and music.  So 'Whistle A Happy Tune' as you join the group on Sunday, March 19th, 2006 at 6:15 at the Boulder Dinner Theatre for 'The King and I'. Tickets to this wonderful show are $42 for center seats and $37.75 for seats a little to the side. Checks should be made payable to: Boulder Dinner Theatre.

NEW GALA UNDERWRITERS:

Boulder Creek Winery and National Distributing Co. have both joined our growing list of event sponsors donating wine and champagne to serve at our anniversary dinner on April 30th.  Other sponsors include the St Julien Hotel, Daily Camera, Colt Reproductions, 8 Days a Week Copy Center and the Dave Fulker Jazz Quintet.  We’re still trying to gather more sponsors to underwrite the costs of all the 40th anniversary events.  If you know a bank, law firm, insurance company, real estate broker or other business willing to sponsor our 40th anniversary season, events and concert, please let Stephanie Wanek know at rehearsal or by email: smwanek@yahoo.com. Many local companies do this regularly and we’d love to tap into this resource to underwrite our expenses and maximize our revenue.

ADVERTISING: You may notice several terrific ads running in the newspaper

this spring. Thanks to our new major sponsor, the Daily Camera, we will be heavily

promoting our spring concerts and 40th anniversary events. This is a fabulous

boost to our efforts to grow our audiences and raise community awareness.

FUNDRAISING ASSISTANTS:

The job of fundraising has grown as the Chorale expands its outreach into the community.  Increasing sponsorship is essential to meet the growing demands of our budget. We need to apply a larger number of tools to ensure our success; marketing, development and fundraising are critical. Please give some thought to joiningthe Fundraising arm of the Chorale and work on the ongoing projects such as the Annual Fund, Corporate Donations, Grants, Membership Events or Angel Tickets. There are plenty of opportunities to explore! Please see Stephanie Wanek or JoAn Segal and indicate your interest.

FILL THE HOUSE

It’s our 40th anniversary and the goal for us all is to spread the word about upcoming concerts and events.   There’s no better way to support the Chorale  than to fill the house at every concert!

Community Birthday Card packets are now available!

This card will be a colorful and creative celebration and a great way for our town to recognize the Boulder Chorale’s 40 years in the arts!  The more messages we receive, the larger the card grows!

Help invite the whole community to help commemorate our 40th anniversary and ask them to add a message on the Community Birthday Card to the Chorale. Please think about businesses, restaurants, friends, artists, community leaders or other arts/music organizations who may send along a message.

The Community Birthday Card will be unveiled on April 30th at the St Julien Hotel during a benefit dinner.  The card will also be on display on May 6th at the Anniversary Concert at Macky Auditorium. It’s a great advertising opportunity and community goodwill too. We are asking for a $40 contribution per message ($40 for 40 years!).

NOTE: This Birthday Card project was designed as a creative way to increase awareness about the Chorale in the community but it’s just as important to raise funds for the Chorale. We’re hoping for 100 messages from community members and we’ll need your help to get us there!!

Gala Tickets & Incentive Program for all Chorale Members.  We love that so many of you are industrious and energetic and we need your help to make the most of the birthday card project. We need you to go out to the businesses you know and ask them to place a message on the Community Birthday Card (with the suggested $40 contribution). If you solicit three greetings, you’ll earn a free gala ticket. Solicit six and you’ve got a pair!

Limited Ruby Packages.  When you receive your gala invitations, note that the RSVP card will have the option of purchasing Ruby Packages. Ruby is the gem of the 40th anniversary and this special $150 package will include admission to the benefit evening on April 30th and a center section ticket to the Anniversary concert on May 6th at Macky Auditorium.
