About the Chorale Board

On Monday, May 8, at our annual meeting, we will elect 10 Chorale members to the Board of Directors. Some of those in the running are incumbents, who may or may not be re-elected, but we will definitely have some new people coming on to the Board after this election. We hope many of you will decide to throw your hats into the ring.

So, this article is designed to answer the following questions: Who are the Board members right now? What does the Board do? Why do we need a Board at all? Who would make a good Board member? Why should you consider seeking election?

The Board consists of up to sixteen members plus the past president, who serves ex officio. "Ex officio" means "by virtue of the office held." It doesn't mean the person has no vote!

There is an Executive Committee, made up of the officers: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Past President. For 2005-6, the President is JoAn Segal; the Vice President, Elsbeth Pryer Diehl, the Secretary, Sharon Soderlund, and the Treasurer, Jeff Hale. Sue Hintz-Siegrist is the Past President. All Board members are elected by the membership. The officers are then elected by the full Board at its annual retreat. Board members who are not officers have various titles and duties. For instance, we have a Librarian; Paul Haynes is now serving in that position. Our concert manager, Miriam Lindahl (affectionately known as the Riser Queen, or RQ), has as her second-in-command Greg Herring. Our membership liaison, Peg Gorce, is assisted by Registrar Wren Fritzlan. Our Fund Raising Chair is Stephanie Wanek. Graphic Design is in the hands of Julie Hale. We have three members-at-large, who step in when needed to ensure our work gets accomplished. Presently these are Karen Haimes, Mary Weisbach, and Diane La Tourrette.

The Board meets once a month, usually at Atonement, on a night other than a Tuesday. The meetings last about two hours. The agenda items usually include the standards: minutes of the previous meeting and a financial report, and reports by Board members about their work, what they need from the rest of us, and ideas for activities they are planning. This year we have had a number of special activities for which Board members have been responsible. Karen Haimes headed up the Concert Dress Committee, which outfitted all our female members. A Task Force headed by Julie and Jeff Hale has been working on plans for a Chorale tour in the summer of 2007. The Gala Committee under Stephanie Wanek has been hard at work planning our anniversary events.

The ongoing work of the Chorale is the business of other Board members and their committees. The Concert Management Committee has set up the venues for all our concerts, planning how to place the risers, chairs, music stands, and any other equipment for the concerts. Planning for registration keeps Peg and Wren busy and they sometimes have reports for the Board. Paul orders, distributes, and keeps records of all our music, and - together with Jeff Hale, Treasurer, calculates and collects from each of us the amount we owe. Diane and Sue have been active with the Grants Committee, headed by a non-Board member, Josephine Bynder. Mary Weisbach has served as liaison from the Board to the Chamber Chorale.

In the coming year, we would like to set up a special committee to build long-term (5 years) and short-term plans (2 years), with a Board member heading up the effort. We also need to emphasize marketing and publicity by assigning those responsibilities to a Board member. Our development and fund raising efforts have grown under Stephanie's leadership and we want to devote the necessary resources to those efforts.

Well, so much for what the Board does. Perhaps this detailed explanation gives you an idea that the Board has in fact a great deal to do and, I hope, has convinced you that we really do need a Board. The job of Board member is not a nominal one! A good Board member is someone who has a feeling of commitment to the good of the Chorale, even more than just learning and singing the music. A good Board member pitches in when it is clear that someone is needed to take on a task. A good Board member accepts responsibility for the tasks assigned and finishes them by the deadline. A good Board member tries to get a feel for the members: what they need, what irks them, what pleases them, and how to deal with all fairly. A good Board member knows we are all different and keeps a lid on his/her impatience, putting on a smiling face as much as possible. A good Board member is fair and kind and works congenially with others.

Board members also enjoy each other's collegiality. Our annual retreat gives us the opportunity to be together for a whole weekend reviewing the past year and looking at the upcoming one. This year's Board is comprised of people who like each other and have a good time while working really hard.  Besides, we all gain skills in both personal and work areas and find ourselves linked to new, useful networks.

We'd love to have you consider joining the Board. This is an exciting time to do so. We have begun many new things over the past two years - I wrote about some of them in last month's column. We are an active, successful community endeavor that deserves support in every way. If you would like to join in the enjoyable work it will take to continue moving ahead, please approach one of the Nominating Committee members: JoAn Segal (soprano, jsegalvv@earthlink.net; 303-541-1065), Elsbeth Pryer Diehl (soprano, elsbeth@indra.com; 303-443-2413), or Esri Albritten (alto, esri_a@yahoo.com, 303-449-3662) to discuss your possible candidacy.

Come celebrate our anniversary with a fun evening out.

Ø       Socialize with good company, listen to some history and words for the future.

It’s time to turn in yourRSV P

We need a good headcount to order enough food, please return your RSVP by 4/24.

Wondering what to wear to the gala?

Can’t decide whether to go with jeans or corduroy?

Wishing we would all just wear our Concert Dress?

The Dukes of Dress Code say ….

You will see people on the fancier side and on the more casual side.

Surely there will be a tux or two and maybe a nice gown as well.

There will be slacks on him and on her (but hopefully not at the same time).

And don’t be surprised if the Riser Queen trots out her tiara!!

The Chorale Gala is a celebrating of our 40 years in the Boulder arts community.

Come relax with your friends and enjoy the company of everyone there.

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS THAT YOU ARE THERE!!

THE COMMUNITY BIRTHDAY CARD IS GROWING…

We’re getting many notes from businesses placing a message in the birthday card but we still need your help soliciting the community. Help us make the unveiling truly spectacular at the gala.  We especially need more messages from restaurants and retail shops around town. We benefit from messages on our card and they benefit from the advertising.    CURRENT MESSAGE TALLY:  14 (as of 3/24) and our goal is 100 messages. We still have a ways to go.   FREE GALA TICKETS! For those members who would like to earn a free gala ticket, here is your opportunity!  Through the Incentive Program if you solicit three greetings for the Birthday Card (with the suggested $40 contribution), you will earn a free gala ticket. Solicit six greetings and bring a date!! INFORMATION: Find packs in the lobby next to a list of businesses to approach. All birthday messages can be returned in person or mailed back to the Chorale.

BIRTHDAY MESSAGE DEADLINE IS TUESDAY, APRIL 25th

Greetings from the President, JoAn Segal

Thoughts on Spring Repertoire

If the stag had drunk his fill

His need would not have touched my soul;

Then, would I yearn for what I love?

Would my longing make me sing?

Singing, would I praise the Lord?

And -- just or unjust -- could I play

A song that's new or one that's old

On ten-stringed lyre or on harp?

Or would my spirit sing all day,

So full of joy that it might burst,

So full of her that's like a rose,

Like melody sung sweet in tune?

Or, knowing full my weaknesses,

Eschewing pride and false conceits,

Should I forsake such lofty dreams

And simply make my garden grow?

Boulder Dinner Theatre

Organized by Joanie Oram

A THANK YOU to all of you who supported our recent outing at the Boulder Dinner Theatre.   Sixty of us went, which means a profit of $300 for the Chorale.  I can’t believe this marks the 14th year that I have been taking you to the Boulder Dinner Theatre.  Oh, how time flies when you’re having fun!!  I must thank my co-chair, Esri Albritten for all that she did.  Without you, Esri, we would not have had a party.  You are the best—it’s been a joy

to work with you.

All Boulder Chorale members are welcome to attend Board of Directors meetings, or talk with any board member about an issue that we should discuss at the meetings.
