Newsletter of the
Greetings
from the President
JoAn
Segal
I
welcome all of you to another exciting year with the Boulder Chorale. As I move
into my second year as President (this time around - I was President of the
Board in 1995-96, too!), here are some of the things I've learned, things one
doesn't necessarily know about as a singer member of the
Chorale.
All
that rehearsing, learning the music, being faithful in attendance, getting
outfitted with concert wear, leads to the fine performances - what we are really
all about. But behind the scenes is the infrastructure we need to support that
activity. We need to lease
rehearsal and workshop space; we need to negotiate contracts with collaborating
groups - the Boulder Philharmonic, the Kutandara Marimba Ensemble, the Cathedral
Brass. We need to hire and support staff: an Artistic Director (our marvelous
Tim), an
Associate Conductor/Director, Women's Chorale (our
beautiful, highly competent Kim), a Principal
Accompanist/Music Preparation (the extraordinary Mike),
and accompanists for the Women's Chorale (sweet Caitlin) and the Chamber Chorale
(Tony, with Major) and our Administrator sine qua non, Erin. We must arrange for
space, soloists, and instrumentalists, publicity and printed programs for our
independent concerts - we have three this year: the Duruflé in November, the
Christmas Make We Joy in December, and the American Tapestry in March. The
Beethoven Ninth with the Boulder Philharmonic under its new music director,
Michael Butterman, in April, brings a new relationship and hope for future
collaborations.
We
must order and distribute the music to our singers, recruit new members
(especially male voices), promote our concerts to gather audiences to hear us
perform. We need to budget carefully to control expenses and to raise sufficient
income to cover those expenses through ticket sales (for the first time, we will
offer a season ticket option at a good price break), and soliciting ads,
donations, and grants.
We
are embarking on a strategic planning process that will help us move forward
into our fifth decade with definite goals ahead of us. It's an exciting time to
be in the Chorale, a challenging time for leading this community chorus to the
excellence it can achieve.
Without your commitment to
responsible membership, we would have no Chorale at all; but that commitment and
participation is undergirded by an infrastructure that supports and strengthens
it. Welcome to a wonderful year!
Greetings
from the Artistic Director
Tim
Snyder
Every conductor has a wish list. Looking back on our recent
seasons, I am struck by the number of works on my own wish list which we have
performed—Bach’s Magnificat and Wachet auf, Beethoven’s Ninth, Carmina Burana, the Requiems of Mozart, Faure and Verdi,
Chichester Psalms, Ceremony of Carols, Rachmaninoff’s The Bells, Messiah, Mozart’s Confessor Vespers. It’s quite an achievement, this line-up.
But more to the point, it is a privilege.
To encounter the great works, to discern the composer’s intentions and
strive to meet them, to work with you in bringing these works to life is a great
joy and a great responsibility.
As
we enter a new season, I want to challenge us to renew and grow in our
discipline. Let me encourage us
towards more score study and note-learning outside of rehearsal, and towards
stronger continuity and retention between rehearsals. Kim and I have proposed several
new initiatives which should help us along the way. We will distribute our podium time in
rehearsal more evenly among the three ensembles. We will continue to post a detailed plan
of the upcoming rehearsal on the website. New to the rehearsal plan will be
periodic “guideposts” which will allow you to measure your progress and plan
your course. If you’ve ever been in
a play, think of it as the date we go “off-book”. Each singer in the full Chorale will be
individually placed by section, and according to voice-type (and height!),
within the ensemble. This seating
chart will be established early in our first weeks and will be used throughout
the year in rehearsal and performance.
I am most excited about our upcoming rehearsal retreat—something with
which the members of the Women’s and Chamber Chorales are already familiar. For the first time, the full Chorale
will meet for a day-long rehearsal/food/good time intensive. The day is designed to be fun and
productive, and will surely pay benefits as we head into our musically ambitious
first concerts in November. Please
mark your calendars now for Saturday, September 30th.
We’ve made tremendous strides in our musical growth and
refinement in recent years. I dare
say the May 6 concert was our finest yet—your Mozart sent my spirits
soaring! Incidentally, “Send
Spirits Soaring” is our theme for the year. An apt phrase, I think, (and one I
co-opted from last year’s annual fund drive) in describing what we do and what
we are about.
The
41st season of the Boulder Chorale opens with a program of works long
near the top my wish list—works of the great 20th century French
master Maurice Duruflé. His choral
works are marked by an ingenious fusion of chant, counterpoint and richly
expressive harmonies. The full
Chorale will perform Duruflé’s Requiem—the composer’s most famous work;
the Chamber Chorale will offer the sublime Quatre Motets sur des Themes
Grégoriens; and the full Chorale (divided into men’s and women’s ensembles)
will perform some of the Gregorian chants upon which Duruflé based these
works. Our Holiday concerts return
this season, by popular demand. Joined by the Kutandara Ensemble and the
Cathedral Brass Quintet, our December concerts will feature the Chorale, Women’s
and Chamber Chorales in a spirited Holiday program sure to please. All three ensembles will take the stage
again in March for a program we are calling An American Tapestry—a warm
and eclectic program of Americana including folksongs, spirituals and musical
theatre works. Our season ends in
spectacular style as we join the Boulder Philharmonic under the baton of
newly-appointed music director Michael Butterman in one performance of Beethoven 9 at Macky Auditorium.
I
want to thank and acknowledge our Board of Directors, the various sub-committees
of the Board, and especially our president JoAn Segal, for their tireless work
on our behalf.
The
talents and initiative of these folks continue to inspire and challenge me. We thrive because of them. Speaking of sub-committees, the members
of the Tour Task Force worked throughout last year investigating destinations,
gathering feedback and soliciting proposals for our 2007 Summer Tour. I’m thrilled with their choice, hope you
are too, and I look forward to what will undoubtedly be another famous
experience—especially the concert we are slated to give aboard the Greek cruise
ship—Opa!
Wishing you all good things for the reminder of summer,
and looking forward to seeing you August 29, I am
Yours truly,
Tim
Greetings from Women’s
Chorale Director and Chorale Associate Director
Kimberly
Needham
I
am pleased to announce the continuation of the Boulder Women’s Chorale. The group will operate as it did last
year, as a non-auditioned group for all interested Boulder Chorale women. We will participate in two concerts this
season: “Make We Joy” in December and the Americana Concert in March. Since our season is relatively short,
Tim Snyder has invited Women’s Chorale members to sing Beethoven’s Ninth with
the large group in the spring.
The
Women’s Chorale will hold a potluck/rehearsal on Saturday, September
9th, from 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. at Diana Doyle’s home. Maps will be provided. It will be a wonderful way to get to
know each other and to get a head start on the music.
The
board of directors has approved a plan to allow Chamber Chorale women dual
membership in the Women’s Chorale. Dual enrolled members will miss 20 minutes
from one choir each week in order to ensure equitable participation in both
groups. We are excited that many women will not have to choose between the two
small groups now! It’s a win-win situation for all!
We
are happy to welcome back Caitlin Sugishita as accompanist and will be excited
to hear news of her as a new mother of a baby boy! Caitlin, Tim, and I are
looking forward to a wonderful season with this talented group of
women!

4:00 p.m. (The

will send out the application form. Thanks—hope you are enjoying your summer
R&R.
Boulder Chamber Chorale Auditions
Timothy Snyder
All current members of the Boulder
Chorale, members of the Women’s Chorale, and members of the community are
invited and encouraged to audition for the Chamber Chorale, which will continue
to rehearse on Tuesday evenings beginning at 6:30 p.m. Full and active
membership in the Boulder Chorale is required of all Chamber Chorale
singers. All
membership policies for the Boulder Chorale (attendance, dress rehearsal,
concert dress, etc.) will apply to each member of the Chamber Chorale.
All 2005-2006 Chamber Chorale
members must re-audition.
Auditions will be held August 8 and
9 from 6:30-9:30 p.m. and August 11 from 4-7 p.m. at Atonement Lutheran
Church. For those out of
town the week of August 7, an alternate audition date will be held Saturday,
August 19 from 1-3 p.m.
To
schedule an audition appointment, please contact: Erin Christensen-Mandel at
boulderchorale@yahoo.com or by phone: (303) 554-7692.
Important: It is hoped that the
Chamber Chorale roster will be finalized before the first full Chorale rehearsal
(August 29).
Please do not
wait to schedule your audition. Auditions for returning members will not be held
during the first week of regular rehearsals, as in years past.
The purpose of the audition is to
hear what you can do, not what you can’t. The auditions with Tim and Kim are designed to
be friendly, casual and painless. Each 10-minute audition will include
vocalization, aural recall and sight-reading (melodic and rhythmic). The most important
consideration, however, is one’s ability and desire to successfully prepare the
repertoires for both the Full and Chamber Chorales. For the first time
this year, women of the Chamber Chorale will be permitted concurrent membership
in the Women’s Chorale. If you have questions or would like more
information about the Chamber Chorale, the Chamber/Women’s combination, or the
audition process feel free to contact Tim (timothy.snyder@colorado.edu).
Chorale Tour to Greece
Erin Christensen-Mandel, Coordinator
The Greece Tour will be from June
28-July 7, 2007.
Members from the Chorale, the Women’s Chorale, friends, and family are
all invited to join us. In the meantime, we will have a representative
from Gateway Tours visiting at the end of the large Chorale rehearsal on
Tuesday, September 12, 2006.
Payment Information:
About Air Deviations:
Gateway
Tours do not allow out-going flight deviations. This means that if you will not be
flying to Greece on the same flight as the Chorale group (ex: if you leave
before or after June 28, earlier or later in the day on June 28th, if you wish
to use your own frequent flier miles, or if you use a different airline, etc.)
you will be responsible for your own
airline transportation. In this case,
you can purchase a “Land Only” package (approximately $1500) and will be
responsible for meeting up with the group in Greece.
Gateway
Tours does allow deviations on the returning flight. If you fly out with the Chorale group and you plan on
extending your stay past July 7, you can! Gateway will charge a processing fee for each
deviation and will also charge any supplemental fees assessed by the
airline. More
information about the charges will be available in when the Gateway
Representative visits in September.
Good News:
We will be visiting Athens, Cape
Sounion, and taking a cruise to Mykonos, Kusadasi, Rhodes, and Santorini. There will be
four performances throughout the tour: two in Athens, one on the cruise ship and
one near Delphi.
If you would like a color brochure of our tour, please let me know. As always, if you
have any questions, please contact me:

Fundraising CornerA Summary of Fundraising Events and Information About Future
Activities for the Boulder Chorale 2006-07 Season
by Stephanie Wanek, Development Chair.
Questions? Comments? Please email me! smwanek@yahoo.com
Why Does the Chorale Need Fundraisers? As we enter another year filled with enriching rehearsals
and exciting concerts, here’s a little spiel about fundraisers. As you know, the
financial health of our organization depends on revenue we generate. We do this
mostly by concert ticket sales and member dues both of which we try to hold as
low as we can. We rely on other fundraising activities to bridge the gap between
what running the Chorale really costs and what we earn through tickets and dues.
It really takes a lot of money to fund a growing organization. We pay the
salaries of a great group of artistic, musical and administrative staff and we
handle all costs related to producing concerts like graphic printing, musicians,
venue rental and advertising. So, though they’re a lot of work and may seem
annoying, these benefits raise vital funds to meet our budget obligations. They
also provide a way for us to communicate our mission. Your help is
essential in every event (and concert) we produce! Like any household, we simply
must make ends meet every year for our growing financial needs. We appreciate all
your help getting the word out about the Chorale, its concerts and
fundraisers.
Get
ready, it’s the first event in our new season…

first-come, first-served. Interested? Send Sharon an email! Registration forms

keep your ears open for opportunities to donate specific items to the Chorale

the craft sale.

Thanks to
all who participated in this, the first competitive election for the Board in
many years.
Newly Created Board Position
Jack Biddle, Vice President/President Elect
I am
thrilled to be chosen to fill the newly created position of Vice
President/President Elect. This position will entail a variety of duties,
the foremost of which is learning the job of President of the Boulder
Chorale.
It’s an
honor to be in this demanding role and one which shouldn't be taken
lightly. I feel
that my pre-retirement experience in management, leadership, organization and
planning have prepared me to step into this Chorale position when the time
comes. I worked
in information technology for 31 years specializing in project management and
planning for the last six years.
I will be
working closely with President JoAn Segal over the next year and helping Elsbeth
Pryer Diehl on the planning committee. I sing in the baritone section at rehearsals
and would enjoy meeting you.
For Your Information, by Miriam Lindahl
Are you
anxious to get a ‘jump start’ on the fall program? Barnes & Noble
is ordering Maurice Duruflé’s
Requiem.
This masterpiece will open our 41st Season
in early November.
Tim’s recommendation is:
Duruflé: Complete Choral Works

2005
Chandos label
$20.54 per
c.d. (tax included)
The
recording is not being held for the Chorale, but they have agreed to keep some
in stock.
New This Year…Season Tickets!
Karen Haimes, Ticket Manager
Watch for an email somewhere around
mid-August announcing when and how you can order yours. You will be saving more
than 15% on each of our concerts when purchasing season tickets! With this
savings, you may want to consider purchasing more than just one----as gifts for
friends, perhaps.
Or, email
the names and addresses of any friends you think may want to order season
tickets (before August 1) to boulderchorale@yahoo.com and we'll add them to our
mailing list. An invitation to order season tickets will be mailed out to
non-members at about the same time that you will get your email invitation.
Order deadline will
be October 14, but seat availability at Macky Auditorium will be on a
first-come, first-served basis. Don't delay! Think now about how many season
tickets you'll want to order so you can order promptly and get the best seats
available in your price range.
Offering season tickets
is an exciting new way to increase our patrons and our audiences. Our 41st
season is starting off on a new level of professionalism!
For the Membership
Peg Gorce and Wren Fritzlan
As members of the Boulder Chorale Board of Directors, Peg
Gorce, Alto, serves as Membership Liaison and Wren Fritzlan, Tenor, serves as
Assistant Registrar. Over the past few years attendance
at rehearsals (particularly dress rehearsals) has improved greatly. This is an
indication of increased commitment to the group and to our own growth and
further development as a group of singers.
Our job is to assist members with registration and to ensure
that attendance is being taken in each section, beginning with our third
rehearsal (September 12). Members are allowed two absences before
each concert without any questions asked. After two absences, it is the Section
Steward’s job and our responsibility to follow up with members who are having
attendance difficulties.
Our attendance policy allows members to submit a written
appeal to the Registrar to be allowed to miss more than two rehearsals, or to
take a leave of absence. All appeals are considered on a case by
case basis, and may involve a consultation with the Artistic Director in terms
of music preparedness and/or ability of any given singer.
It is our intent to be helpful to the membership, to assure
that we are all attending rehearsals in order to prepare our music to the best
of our ability, and to support the mission and purpose of the Boulder Chorale as
an outstanding arts organization in the Boulder community. Walk-in
registration will begin on August 31, 2006 at 5:30 p.m. We look
forward to seeing you again or meeting you for the first time. Welcome to the
Boulder Chorale!!
