303-554-7692 www.boulderchorale.org Newsletter of the
Greetings
JoAn Segal, President
We
are about to embark on an exciting planning process for the Chorale. The
result of this process will be a Strategic Plan that will be used to drive our
activities over a period of 3, 4, or 5 years (deciding on the time period is
also part of the process.) Decisions
about possible future activities will be guided by the plan.
The process will involve a committee of past and present Board members, who
will engage in a number of exercises to help us understand and develop: 1) a
Vision, 2) a Mission Statement, 3) some Core Values, 4) our primary
organizational and artistic goals, 5) strategies to achieve the goals, 6) a
timeline for the process, and 7) measures to track our progress.
At
the end of the process, we will have a “Plan” document of no more than four
pages which will succinctly describe what the Chorale wants to accomplish over
the plan’s time frame. It will contain one-sentence statements of our mission
and vision, will list the Core Values, and will offer perhaps four
organizational and artistic goals.
Tim
Snyder, Artistic Director, JoAn Segal, President, and Jack Biddle, Vice
President/President Elect, met to prepare an outline of the planning process,
which was presented to the Board at its August meeting. According to this process, the next step will
be a three-part brainstorming session where ideas will be elicited from those
present concerning the Mission and Vision statements and the Core Values. So
that everyone can participate, an outside facilitator will record the ideas
brought up during the session. The date
will be Monday, September 18; the time, 7:15 p.m.; the place, Atonement
Lutheran Church.
Following
that session, members of the committee will meet in 3 writing groups, each of
which will bring back to the full committee a draft of one of these three
elements for discussion and refinement.
Subsequently, the committee will continue to work on the goals,
strategies, time lines, and outcome measures.
A draft of the plan will be given to the Board to review, will be
refined following that review, and will be presented to the Board for its
approval at its April meeting. The plan
will be distributed to members before the May annual meeting for member
approval.
I
would like to invite interested Chorale members to participate in this initial
brainstorming session. If you are
interested, please get in touch with me at jsegalvv@earthlink.net.
Upcoming Events
Tim Snyder, Artistic Director
Zimbabwean
master Sheasby Maiture will be our guest for a portion of rehearsal September
19. Mr. Maiture (a Ph.D. candidate in
Ethnomusicology at Indiana University) will teach us an African choral piece to
be performed on our December concerts with the Kutandara marimbas. Here's the fun part: there will be no printed music--we will learn
the piece aurally and entirely by rote.
Our challenge will be to keep the piece alive until December!
Those
who are interested in more time with Mr. Maiture are invited to attend
"Musangano: An African Choral Experience," a weekend African choral
workshop to be held at Atonement September 22-24. Jointly sponsored by the Kutandara Center and
Atonement Lutheran Church, this event is open to singers of all ages and will
include rehearsals with Mr. Maiture, exposure to the rich repertory of African
song, breakfast and lunch on Saturday, and an informal concert for family and
friends on Sunday afternoon. For more
information, take a brochure and registration form from the display outside
Tim's office.

King Soopers Grocery Certificates?
Dede Beardsley
King Soopers gift certificates are the effortless way
for you to make money for the Boulder Chorale.
The key word here is: effortless!
It reminds me of one of my favorite fortunes: “You will earn thousands
of dollars simply by doing nothing!”
How Does It Work?
Through the Boulder Chorale, you buy King Soopers gift
certificates that are as good as cash at King Soopers and at some
Safeways. If you normally spend $200
each month on groceries, you’d buy $200 in certificates and use them as cash
when you shop for groceries.
How do we, the Boulder Chorale, benefit?
We buy the gift certificates at the following
discounts:
·
3% if we purchase
$200-$2499 in certificates
·
4% if we purchase
$2500-$4999 in certificates
·
5% if we purchase
$5000 or more in certificates
The key is getting into the 5% bracket. We can do that by each buying just $50
each month in certificates; that would net the Chorale $250 each month. If we each bought just $100 each month, the
Chorale would make $500 each month...simply by doing nothing! You do the math.
Details
I will have certificates to sell at the Marketplace
during each rehearsal break. (They come
in $25 increments.) So bring your
checkbooks! Make checks payable to
the Boulder Chorale. They’re great
gifts, too! Throw some in the direction
of your starving college student, for example!
Thanks!

The
