Welcome!

The Boulder Children’s Chorale serves students in grades one through eight in three ensembles: two Preparatory Choirs for younger singers and Bel Canto for more experienced singers. Since its inaugural season in 2009, Boulder Children’s Chorale has collaborated with the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra, Boulder Ballet, Mahlerfest, Boulder Kids for Bach, the Baroque Chamber Orchestra of Colorado, Kutandara Marimba, CU Opera and with the adult ensembles of the Boulder Chorale. During the 2014-2015 season, we continue to offer audiences exciting collaborative and outreach performances.

JOIN THE BOULDER CHILDREN'S CHORALE for their 2014-2015 Season!

Auditions are required for students auditioning for Preparatory Choir 2 and Bel Canto. Preparatory Choir 1 students may register for choir without auditioning. No preparation is necessary. Auditions will be held at the following times and location:

Auditions for the 2014 Fall Season will be held:

Saturday, August 23, 2014: 9:00-11:00 AM
Saturday, September 6, 2014: 9:00-11:00 AM

Location is Atonement Lutheran Church.

Children's Chorale Information

Audition Form

The Boulder Children’s Chorale is one of the ensembles of the Boulder Chorale, a 501 (C )(3) organization. As such, it is a secular, non-political entity. The Boulder Chorale has in place policies supporting equal employment opportunity, and against harassment and discrimination.

PREPARATORY CHOIR 1 (grades 1-3)

Students in this choir will learn the fundamentals of choral singing including breath, body alignment, vowel purity, blend and phrasing. Additionally, basic music reading will be taught.

PREPARATORY CHOIR 2 (grades 3-5)

Students in this choir will continue to build the fundamentals of choral singing including breath, body alignment, vowel purity, blend and phrasing. Teaching techniques will be geared toward older students. Music literacy skills will be emphasized.

BEL CANTO (grades 4-8)

Students in this choir will expand upon their knowledge of singing through the rehearsal and performance of challenging choral literature.

Children's Chorale Information

Audition Form

No preparation is necessary.

Auditions will consist of:

1. Vocalizing (to test range)

2. Aural recall (echoing pitches)

3. Sight singing & rhythm reading (skills are not necessary for acceptance into the group)

4. Singing a familiar song like "Happy Birthday"

Boulder Children's Chorale is a choir for treble voices. Boys whose voices have changed are ineligible.

Boulder Children’s Chorale is a performing group. Members are expected to purchase the performance attire and participate in all concerts.

TUITION (includes music)

$250 per year for Preparatory Choir 1 and 2, payable in two installments in September and January

$325 per year for Bel Canto, payable in two installments in September and January

DIRECTORS

Kimberly Watkins
Boulder Children's Chorale Artistic Director & Bel Canto Choir Director

Kim Watkins

Kim Watkins completed dual master’s degrees in music education and vocal performance at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Her professional experience includes fifteen years of secondary choral teaching in North Carolina and Colorado public school systems. During her graduate studies at the University of Colorado, Mrs. Watkins advanced as a finalist in voice competitions sponsored by the Denver Lyric Opera Guild and the National Association of Teachers of Singing. Additionally, she appeared as Madame Lidoine in Dialogues of the Carmelites, and as Gianetta in L’Elisir d’Amore. She also served as conductor of the University Women’s Choir and as an instructor for various music education courses. Mrs. Watkins has been a soloist with the Arvada Chorale, Boulder Chorale and the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra. She has adjudicated the undergraduate vocal competition at CU Boulder, as well as vocal competitions by the Longmont Chorale and the Saint Vrain Valley School District. In 2013, Mrs. Watkins was selected as an Encore Award Finalist by the St. Vrain Valley Education Foundation.

Kim served as Associate Director for the adult ensembles of Boulder Chorale from 2002-2009, leaving to begin work developing Boulder Children's Chorale. Mrs. Watkins is currently Director of Choirs at Niwot High School. She resides in Erie with her husband, Jason, and her son, Daniel.

Kate Klotz
Children’s Preparatory Choirs Director

Kate Klotz

Kate Klotz teaches elementary music in Boulder, Colorado and specializes in teaching beginning vocal technique and music literacy. She completed her Master’s of Music in Music Education at Colorado State University in 2013 and received her undergraduate degree in music education from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 2008. Kate holds all three levels of Kodály certification and has also completed one level of Orff Schulwerk training. She has instructed students in private piano and voice, as well as teaching elementary general music and middle school choir in Colorado and Washington state public schools.

From 2011-2013, Kate served on the artistic staff of the Spokane Area Youth Choirs in Spokane, Washington, where she directed elementary and middle level choirs. She has been a guest clinician and choral adjudicator for the St. Vrain Valley and Omak School Districts, and has sung with the Colorado Conductor’s Chorale and the Spokane Symphony Chorale. She resides in Berthoud with her husband, Nathan, and enjoys reading and spending time outdoors.
